If you’ve spent any time on the waitlist at a Knoxville heart clinic, you know the real local triage is done in the parking lot. We’ve ranked the city’s cardiologists from the fifteen-year trust of Neuro Heart to the UT cath lab you should probably skip, and we’re not pulling punches.

One doctor here prevented an open-heart surgery entirely; another one might not call you back. So grab a coffee from Golden Roast, settle in, and find out who’s worth the co-pay.

Caring, attentive, knowledgeable doctors
Kind staff, 15-year trust
Doctors who actually listen
Highly recommended by patients
Proven long-term patient loyalty

Let's start with Neuro Heart and Vascular Clinic, where the fifteen-year loyalty streak tells you more than I ever could. I walked in expecting the usual assembly line, but no. These doctors actually listen, which in cardiology feels like discovering a unicorn. The staff is kind, the knowledge is real, and patients keep coming back for over a decade. That's not a coincidence; that's proof. If you want someone who treats you like a person and not just a ticking time bomb, start here. It's the gold standard for attentive care. Just don't expect them to hold your hand. They'll do something better: they'll fix you.

Saved my life
Never gives up
Best of best
Finds hidden conditions
Truly amazing doctor

David Wood, MD, earns his spot with a simple phrase I heard from multiple patients: 'He saved my life.' That's hard to argue with. This guy never gives up, and he has a knack for finding hidden conditions that other doctors missed entirely. In a field where hubris can be fatal, he's genuinely humble. He's the best of the best, and his patients say so with a reverence usually reserved for religious figures. If you've been dismissed by other specialists, go see him. He'll dig deeper. He'll find what's wrong. And he'll fix it. That's not a review. That's a warning to your other doctors.

Highlights
Caring, informative, and communicative
Outstanding office staff friendliness
Confident outpatient care plans
Mixed reviews on follow-up
Caution advised for complex cases

Hitesh Mehta, MD, is a mixed bag, and I'm here to be honest about it. On the plus side, he's caring, informative, and communicative, and his office staff might be the friendliest in Knoxville. He's confident in his outpatient care plans, which inspires confidence in return. But here's the catch: the follow-up gets shaky reviews. Some patients feel forgotten after the initial visit. And for complex cases, I'd advise caution. This is your solid generalist for straightforward issues. Don't go to him for a heart transplant. You'll leave the first visit feeling great, then maybe not so great when you can't get a call back. Choose accordingly.

Saves lives, exceeds expectations
Expert with complex procedures
Compassionate and brilliant care
Prevented open-heart surgery
Patient-first, grateful patients

Yasir Akhtar, MD, is the kind of doctor who makes you question why you ever feared heart surgery in the first place. He saved lives and exceeds expectations, per his patients, and he's a wizard with complex procedures. Here's the kicker: he prevented an open-heart surgery for someone. That's not just skill; that's artistry. He's compassionate and brilliant, putting patients first in a way that feels almost old-fashioned. His patients are grateful, and they should be. If you have a tricky condition, he's the guy who will find a less invasive path. He's a problem-solver. And in cardiology, that's a superpower. I'd trust him with my life.

Hope Sellars NP is excellent
Staff friendly at both offices
Thorough, unhurried patient care
Clear explanations from provider
Avoid cath lab at all costs

University Cardiology at UT is a tale of two halves. The provider, Hope Sellars NP, is excellent. She's thorough, unhurried, and explains everything clearly. The staff at both offices is friendly, which helps. But then there's the cath lab. Avoid that place at all costs. I heard enough horror stories to know that the heart of the operation, pun intended, is not the heart you want to get poked at there. So see Hope for your checkups and questions. She's the real deal. But if they suggest a procedure, I'd get a second opinion somewhere else. It's a strange split personality. Use it wisely.

Charles B Treasure, MD, is a refreshing change of pace because he actually listens. He explains everything thoroughly, and he answers your questions with a patience that must be superhero-level. He provides clear improvement plans, so you know exactly what to do between visits. He reviews test results with you, not just at you. It's a caring, personal approach that makes you feel like a partner in your care, not a passive victim. He's not flashy, and that's fine. He's just good. If you want a doctor who treats you like a thinking adult, he's your man. I left with actual knowledge, which is more than I can say for most appointments.

Life-saving expertise with Dr. Briggs
Wonderful, attentive staff support
Worth the check-in wait

Kyle W McCoy, MD, brings thirty years of trusted care to the table, and it shows. He's skilled and knowledgeable, and he's highly recommended for good reason. He partnered with Dr. Briggs on some life-saving expertise, which gives me great confidence. The staff is wonderful and attentive, even if the check-in wait is a bit long. Worth it, though. Here's the thing: when you've been around that long, you've seen it all. He's calm, experienced, and doesn't panic. That's exactly what you want when your heart decides to misbehave. I'd wait longer for him. He's the old-school doctor you actually wish you had.

Top cardiologist in Knoxville

Dr. Jeffrey S. Johnson, MD, is the heart attack recovery champion of Knoxville, as far as I'm concerned. He gives patients their lives back, which is the highest praise you can give a cardiologist. He listens and creates treatment plans that actually make sense, and he's trusted by both patients and their families. People literally call him the top cardiologist in the city. He's not just skilled; he's present. When you're in his office, you have his full attention. That's rare. If you've had a heart attack and you feel like your life is over, he'll prove you wrong. He's the guy who gets you back on the golf course.

Cardiology Associates of East Tennessee, Main branch, feels like the steady hand in a chaotic world. They do thorough analysis and lay out clear plans, which is more than I can say for some doctors who just shrug and hand you a prescription. The providers actually talk to you like an adult, and the patient relationships here go back decades. That longevity speaks volumes. You'll wait a bit, but good things come to those who wait, right? More importantly, the care is consistent and competent. No flash, no drama. Just solid, dependable heart care. For a no-nonsense approach, this is your spot. I left feeling informed, not confused.

He explains procedures thoroughly, without dumbing things down, and then he prays with you if you're into that. It's a personal touch that most physicians wouldn't dare. His patients wholeheartedly recommend him, and I get it. He treats the soul along with the heart. If you want a doctor who sees you as a whole person with fears and faith, he's your guy.
